AIR, DD's Early Warning for natural disasters
New Delhi, May 16: The All India Radio and Doordarshan are working on a project to develop a system of Early Warning Broadcast in the event of natural disasters.
The two wings of the Prasar Bharati have initiated a study of the system suitable for Indian Environment, Minister of Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi told the Lok Sabha today in a written reply.
He said limited experimental transmissions had been carried out on Medium wave and FM transmitters in Delhi.
The Prasar Bharati has a large transmitting infrastructure, which can be used to convey emergency messsages to people about natural disasters. But for that manufactureres will have to provide EWBS ready TV and receivers, he said.
Such a system is in operation in Japan sinsce 1985, through which not only warning about natural disasters are conveyed, but also information about prevention and rescue measures.
