Jerusalem, Mar 14: Israel is trying to put a name to the war it waged against Lebanon's Hezbollah guerrillas last year, but not without some infighting.

Defence Minister Amir Peretz, pressed by families of some of the 117 Israeli soldiers and 41 civilians killed in the 34-day conflict, has set up a panel to come up with a proposal.

Yaacov Edri, a minister without portfolio, yesterday said he was mounting a separate search through a ministerial committee that he chairs and which oversees state ceremonies.

Asked by Israel's popular YNet news web site to offer a name of their own, readers came up with suggestions such as ''Operation Failure'', ''The Idiotic War'', ''The Big Shame'' and ''Amir Peretz's Final War''.

Lebanese generally refer to the conflict as the ''July War''.

Hezbollah calls it ''The Divine Victory''.

Many Israelis refer to the fighting, which also killed 1,200 people in Lebanon, including an estimated 270 Hezbollah guerrillas, as the Second Lebanon War -- waged 24 years after Israel battled the Palestine Liberation Organisation in Lebanon.

The Israeli military's failure to crush Hezbollah and halt the group's daily cross-border rocket attacks led many in Israel to see the war as a failure.

A government-appointed commission investigating the war yesterday announced it would publish preliminary findings next month that will draw conclusions about how the war was handled by Peretz, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and the chief of the armed forces at the time, Dan Halutz, who has since resigned.
