Vijayawada, Aug 7: With the threat of fresh floods looming large, authorities have alerted people downstream of Prakasam Barrage to be extra cautious as about 4.4 lakh cusecs had been released to the barrage from the Nagarjunsagar Reservoir last night.

Talking to sources an Irrigation Department official said there was a surge in water receipts with fresh spells of rain in upper reaches of River Krishna resulting in higher outflows from Jurala to Srisailam.

The water discharged from Srisailam would reach Nagarjunasagar before it flowed into the barrage.

The water from Nagarjunsagar would reach the barrage by tomorrow.

The Irrigation authorities discharged 3.3 lakh cusecs of flood water into the sea till 0600 hrs today morning.

The official said 35 of 70 crest gates were lifted fully while the others were lifted to a height of eight feet for discharing the water into the sea.

The full reservoir level (FRL) at the barrage stood at 11.5 feet, he added.

Krishna District Joint Collector S Suresh Kumar said the total outflow from the barrage would not cross 5.5 lakh cusecs as there were no fresh inflows from the Munneru, Kattaleru and Wyra Rivulets.

The administration engaged mechanised boats to shift the residents from the island habitations to the relief camps where as many as 1,723 families comprising 6,770 people were staying.

Officials had prohibited movement of vehicular traffic on the barrage.
