Junior docs protest Dr Venugopal's dismissal

Bhopal, July 7: Junior doctors in medical colleges in Madhya Pradesh today staged a protest demonstration to express their solidarity against ''unceremonious'' dismissal of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) director P Venugopal.

Junior doctors at Indore Medical College began strike against the decision, while junior doctors in the state capital boycotted the OPD for three hours. Junior doctors in Gwalior, Jabalpur and Rewa medical colleges also protested the move.

Madhya Pradesh Junior Doctors' Association (MPJDA) President Manish Rawat told UNI that doctors in Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Rewa and Gwalior have staged protest against the ''arbitrary'' and ''dictatorial'' decision.

''Political interference in educational institutes would not be tolerated. This is a direct assault on the autonomy of doctors and medical fraternity is anguished at the decision,'' he said.

Dr Rawat demanded that Dr Venugopal be reinstated and the Centre assure that no political interference would take place in AIIMS and other premier educational institutes.

A UNI report from Gwalior said, junior doctors at the Gajra Raja Medical College went on token strike affecting health services.

JDA secretary Prabhat Upadhyay said doctors were on token strike and future strategy would be chalked out after organising a meeting of doctors and in consultation with the IMA and Teachers Association.

Junior doctors in Jabalpur medical college would go on strike tomorrow.
