Hearing on Amar Singh disqualification on Jun 16
New Delhi, June 9: The Election Commission (EC) has fixed a hearing on June 16 on a petition seeking the disqualification of Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh from the Rajya Sabha on the ground that he held an office of profit.
The EC had earlier issued a notice to Mr Singh for his reply to the petition. The Samajwadi Party leader had sought extension of time on two occasions which was given, EC sources said.
Mr Singh may appear or send his counsel on June 16, they said.
The EC had acted on a reference from the President on a complaint seeking Mr Singh's disqualification on the ground that as chairperson of Uttar Pradesh Development Council, he held an office of profit and attracted disqualification.
Along with this, the EC will also hear cases concerning six MLAs from Manipur and one each from Nagaland and Delhi, the sources said.
