New Delhi, June 7: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers today blocked traffic at many major intersections in the city in protest against the recent hike in petrol and diesel prices, causing traffic snarls across the capital.

Addressing party workers at Moti Nagar in West Delhi, BJP President Rajnath Singh demanded that either the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre bring the price rise under control or resign.

Prices of petrol and diesel had been increased six times in the last two years. While prices of petrol had jumped 50 per cent, it had increased 45 per cent for diesel, he said.

Inflation had also been increasing all the time, he added.

Mr Singh said the hike in prices of petrol and diesel would have a cascading effect on all other items and hit the common man hard.

The move would not only result in truck and lorry rentals being jacked up but also increase the prices of all goods with their transporation costs going up, he added.

The party President suggested that the government should build a buffer, like the US, to immune itself from the frequent ups and downs in the price of crude oil in the international market.

Party Vice President Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Delhi MP V K Malhotra, party's state President Harsh Vardhan and Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Jagdish Mukhi were also present on the occasion.

The BJP had earlier announced its plan to block traffic at various crossings in Delhi for two hours starting 1100 hrs.

Mr Singh also promised to increase the party's momentum to rake up issues that affected the common man.
