Kathmandu, May 13: The newly formed Government has suspended nine top security officials, including three security chiefs, on the recommendation of the high-level judicial committee probing into the excesses committed during the period King Gyanendra took over absolute power.

The Government suspended Inspector General of Police Shyam Bhakta Thapa, Inspector General of Armed Police Force Sahabir Thapa and chief of the National Investigation Department Devi Ram Sharma from their posts.

Similarly, Additional Inspector Generals of Police Rajendra Bahadur Singh, Rup Sagar Moktan, Rabi Raj Thapa and Krishna Basnet and Senior Superintendents of Armed Police Force Madhav Thapa and Durja Kumar Rai have also been suspended.

An emergency meeting of the cabinet decided to suspend the chiefs and also gave responsibility to the National Security Council to decide about the suspension of Chief Of Army, Pyar Jung Thapa.

The high-level judicial committee panel that was formed this week after tremendous pressure from the members of parliament and pro-democracy activists to take strong action against people allegedly responsible for suppressing the people's movement had recommended the government to suspend the chiefs and other top officials of the security organs as they tried to affect the probe while they were still holding their posts.
