Curfew relaxed in riot-hit areas for women, children
Vadodara, May 4: The authorities today relaxed curfew for a couple of hours only for women and children in all six police station areas in the city to enable them to buy their essentials.
While curfew was relaxed from 1200 hrs to 1400 hrs in Panigate, Raopura and Karelibaug areas, the other three curfew-bound areas of Wadi, City and Navapura were given curfew relaxation from 1430 hrs to 1630 hrs.
Talking to UNI, police commissioner Deepak Swaroop claimed that situation in the entire city was ''totally under control'' and no incident of violence was reported today.
As a result of combing operations, the police chief said, around 200 people had been arrested in connection with the violent incidents. This is the first time in the last four days that Navapura and City police station limits had relaxation in curfew which was clamped on Monday after violence broke out following demolition of a 100-year-old ''dargah'' at the historic Champaner Gate. Earlier, on Tuesday, curfew was relaxed for a couple of hours only in Panigate, Raopura, Karelibaug and Wadi police station areas, but a decision to grant further relaxation on the following day was withdrawn after the situation took a serious turn when a mob set a youth afire in his car on the Ajwa road on the night of May 2.
