Vadodara, May 3 (UNI) Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today directed the Vadodara district administration to take all necessary steps to contain the ongoing violence and asked them to restore peace as early as possible.

The Chief Minister's directive came after his visit to the riot-affected areas, which witnessed violence following the demolition of a century-old dargah on Monday.

Mr Modi visited the city after the Centre asked the state to take all steps for restoration of normalcy and communal harmony in the trouble-torn city.

He was accompanied by Gujarat Home Minister Amit Shah and other top government and police officials.

Talking to UNI, Mr Shah asserted that the situation will be brought under control by tonight by using all means and measures.

Mr Modi, who arrived here from Gandhinagar this afternoon, directly went to the affected areas of Raopura, Nayay Mandir and Mandavi Gate. He, however, avoided visiting the Champaner Gate.

Mr Modi appealed to the residents of both the communities to maintain peace and communal harmony and restore normalcy at the earliest.

He also visited the victims at the Sir Sayajirao Gaekwad (SSG) Hospital to enquire about their conditions.
