Lucknow, Mar 23 (UNI) People of Rae Bareli today came out into the streets shouting pro-Sonia Gandhi slogans after the news of her resignation from the Lok Sabha seat was announced.

Equating her with former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, locals gathered at the Rae Bareli Congress office and shouted slogans.

''People of Rae Bareli are not unhappy with the decision...in fact they are happy she has taken the wind out of Opposition's onslaught on the 'office of profit' issue,'' said Uttar Pradesh Congress chief spokesperson A P Singh.

UP Congress welcomed Sonia's move and claimed it would force the Opposition to rethink its strategy. ''After refusing the post of PM, her latest decision proves she thinks beyond such petty posts,'' it said.

Just before the last general elections, Sonia announced to field her son Rahul from the Amethi seat and decided to fight elections from the neighbouring Rae Bareli. Former PM Indira Gandhi too had represented the Rae Bareli seat in Lok Sabha.

In 1999, she was elected to the 13th LS from Amethi, where she became the Leader of the Opposition.

She was elected to the 14th LS from the Rae Bareli constituency of UP.
