Parliament adjourned to protest against Bush visit

New Delhi, Mar 2: Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned soon after they assembled today (Mar 2, 2006) as members of the Left, the Samajwadi Party and the TDP disrupted proceedings in protest against the visit of United States (US) President George W Bush to the country.

The slogan-shouting members described the visit as an 'affront to the Nation and to Parliament' which, they said had already adopted a resolution condemning the American attack on Iraq and its continued ocupation of that country.

Accusing the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government of surrendering to the US imperialism and failing to practice an independent foreign policy, they said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who himself was a party to the censure motion against President Bush, should apologise for giving a red carpet welcome to the visiting American President.

In the Lok Sabha, the Samajwadi Party, donning red caps, rushed to the well as soon as the House assembled, shouting slogans of 'Go Back Bush'. They were soon joined by the Left MPs. Sensing the mood of the House, Deputy Speaker Charnjit Singh Atwal adjourned till 1400 hrs.

In the Rajya Sabha also, the SP MPs, donning red caps, started shouting anti-Bush slogans as soon as the House assembled and demanded suspension of the Question Hour. The Left and TDP Members also joined them. Members from the treasury benches too stood up countering the demand. When Deputy Chairman K Rehman Khan saw that his repeated appeals for maintaing calm fell on deaf ears, he adjourned the House till 1200 hrs.
