Defence Minister Arun Jaitley, who was present at the occassion said: "I am sure INS Kamorta will serve this country effectively for a very long time."
He added that 90 per cent of the ship is indegenous and that its design and making has taken place at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers in Kolkata, one of our foremost shipbuilding yards.
Kamorta, a frontline warship with an array of anti-submarine warfare, anti-air and anti-surface weapons and sensors, is the first of four ASW stealth corvettes designed by Indian Navy's in-house organisation, Directorate of Naval Design (DND).
It would carry short-range Surface-to-Air missiles (SAM) and Active Towed Array Decoy System (ATDS). It can also carry an integral ASW helicopter.
Jaitley said that in recent months amongst the various initiatives government has undertaken, one is indigenous manufacture of our Defence deployment.
