External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Vikas Swarup has been appointed as the next Indian High Commissioner to Canada. Swarup, who has been serving on the post since April 2015, is an officer of the 1986 batch of the Indian Foreign Services (IFS). Swarup, who is also a noted novelist, has previously served in the United States, United Kingdom, South Africa and Japan. He will replace Arun Kumar Sahu, who is currently working as acting Indian High Commissioner to Canada. Swarup is at present an Additional Secretary and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) . He is expected to take up his new assignment shortly. Gopal Baglay, who is Joint Secretary in the Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan division in MEA, will succeed Swarup.
