Modi, who addressed the public, said he decided to adopt the village after hearing about the death of five persons in a fire in the village soon after confirming to contest the Lok Sabha election from Varanasi earlier this year. Modi went on to win against Aam Aadmi Party leader and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal by a big margin.
Modi, who floated his idea of MPs and MLAs adopting villages across the country at his maiden Independence Day speech this year, said no other place can teach one the values that a village can.
Modi stressed issues like child mortality, cleanliness, women empowerment and development during his speech.
Modi arrived in Varanasi on a two-day tour, his first after becoming the prime minister and he is scheduled to inaugurate projects here including one for the weavers.
