Srinagar, May 21: Kashmir University Chancellor on Wednesday said the higher education opportunities in the Valley and Ladakh region were limited, but the institution was building facilities to increase the avenues as well as start various job-oriented courses.

"If you look at Kashmir Valley and Ladakh region, the higher education opportunities are very limited. The total number of seats even in basic sciences is very limited," Srikumar Banerjee told reporters.

The Chancellor said the university is building facility for education in advanced level and the higher education sector cannot be neglected.

"There is a proposal that we should start working on nanosciences. But when we research and we find that if you want to start working on nanosciences and nanotechnology, you must have a basic background of physics and chemistry.

"So unless you start the departments of physics and chemistry, you cannot embark upon nanosciences. We are building facilities for advanced education and other vocational courses, but we cannot neglect the higher education component," he said.

Banerjee said the university will start various job-oriented courses to help tap the growing unemployment in the state.

"We will be starting vocational courses like diplomas in automobile repairing and mobile repairing in partnership with local units at Ganderbal and that would help fight the unemployment," he said.

The chancellor said the university will complete the construction of pre-engineered buildings at the designated land for the campus in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district within the next few months.

"Our foremost effort is to build pre-engineered buildings within six to nine months in Ganderbal where eight schools of the university will start functioning," he said.

The university, proposed to function from Ganderbal, is currently functioning from three different campuses.

The chancellor said the transfer of land to the university in Ganderbal has almost been done and a boundary wall on an 11-km perimeter is being built.

He said apart from offering the world class education, the university, as part of its academic social responsibility, would also provide coaching to civil services aspirants, besides library facilities to various schools in the locality when it starts functioning at Ganderbal.
