J&K poll: PM Narendra Modi to be 2nd PM to address Poonch in 37 years

Poonch, Nov 24: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address an election rally in Poonch on November 28. BJP's national secretary Tarun Chug informed this in a press conference here on Sunday. [Jammu & Kashmir assembly election 2014 schedule]

"Shri Modi ji will arrive here at 1 pm and address the Rally at Sports stadium on 28th of November where over 50,000 people from across the Poonch district will participate," he said.

Poonch will go to election on December 2 when the second of the five-phase election will be held in Jammu and Kashmir. The first phase will take place on Tuesday, November 25.

In 2008, National Conference's Ajaz Ahmed Jan won from Poonch Haveli seat by a margin of 9,933 votes. The BJP's Pradeep Sharma got only 6,980 votes.

Modi will be the second prime minister to address the people of Poonch. In 1977, the then prime minister Morarji Desai addressed the people. "Since then, no prime minister has bothered to listen to the problems of this border district, Chug said.

According to sources, the BJP is puching its best man forward to woo the Muslim votes for the district has a Muslim majority and their votes will decide the winner. The BJP has nominated two Muslim candidates in Poonch district besides Sharma. Haji Taj Khan and Zulafkar Pathan have been fielded from Surankote and Mendhar constituencies.

In 2008, Surankote was won by the Congress while Mendhar by the People's Democratic Party.
