Format of FIFA World Cup 2014
Thirty two teams will compete in the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil from June 12 to July 13. The 32 sides are divided into 8 groups and top 2 from after the league stage qualify for the knockout stages.

Here is the FIFA World Cup 2014 Format (according to FIFA regulations)

# The competition will be played in a group stage, followed by three knockout stages, the play-off for third place and the final.

Group stage

# The 32 teams taking part in the competition are divided into eight groups of four teams.

# The FIFA Organising Committee have divided the teams into groups by seeding and drawing lots in public at the final draw that took place in Brazil on 6 December 2013, while taking sports and geographic factors into consideration, as far as possible. The host country, Brazil, are seeded as team A1.

# The teams in the eight groups are designated as follows:

# Seeded teams: Brazil (host), Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Switzerland

Group A: A1 - Brazil, A2 - Croatia, A3 - Mexico, A4 - Cameroon

Group B: B1 - Spain, B2 - Netherlands, B3 - Chile, B4 - Australia

Group C: C1 - Colombia, C2 - Greece, C3 - Ivory Coast, C4 - Japan

Group D: D1 - Uruguay, D2 - Costa Rica, D3 - England, D4 - Italy

Group E: E1 - Switzerland, E2 - Ecuador, E3 - France, E4 - Honduras

Group F: F1 - Argentina, F2 - Bosnia and Herzegovina, F3 - Iran, F4 - Nigeria

Group G: G1 - Germany, G2 - Portugal, G3 - Ghana, G4 - USA

Group H: H1 - Belgium, H2 - Algeria, H3 - Russia, H4 - South Korea

# The league format shall be used: each team playing one match against each of the other teams in the same group

Points System

Win - 3 Points

Draw - 1

Loss - 0

# The ranking of each team in each group shall be determined as follows:

a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches

b) goal difference in all group matches

c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches

# If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings shall be determined as follows:

d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned

e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned

f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned

g) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee.

# The teams finishing first and second in each group shall qualify for the round of sixteen.

# The matches in the group stage shall be played in accordance with the following schedule drawn up by the FIFA Organising Committee.

# 1st matchday: A1 Vs A2; A3 Vs A4; B1 Vs B2; B3 Vs B4; C1 Vs C2; C3 Vs C4; D1 Vs D2; D3 Vs D4; E1 Vs E2; E3 Vs E4; F1 Vs F2; F3 Vs F4; G1 Vs G2; G3 Vs G4; H1 Vs H2; H3 Vs H4

# 2nd matchday: A1 Vs A3; A4 Vs A2; B1 Vs B3; B4 Vs B2; C1 Vs C3; C4 Vs C2; D1 Vs D3; D4 Vs D2; E1 Vs E3; E4 Vs E2; F1 Vs F3; F4 Vs F2; G1 Vs G3; G4 Vs G2; H1 Vs H3; H4 Vs H2

# 3rd matchday: A4 Vs A1; A2 Vs A3; B4 Vs B1; B2 Vs B3; C4 Vs C1; C2 Vs C3; D4 Vs D1; D2 Vs D3; E4 Vs E1; E2 Vs E3; F4 Vs F1; F2 Vs F3; G4 Vs G1; G2 Vs G3; H4 Vs H1; H2 Vs H3

# The last two matches in each group shall have simultaneous kick-off times on the same day.

Round of sixteen (knockouts)

# The teams that qualify from the group stage will play the round of sixteen as follows:

Winner A Vs Runner-up B = 1

Winner B Vs Runner-up A = 2

Winner C Vs Runner-up D = 3

Winner D Vs Runner-up C = 4

Winner E Vs Runner-up F = 5

Winner F Vs Runner-up E = 6

Winner G Vs Runner-up H = 7

Winner H Vs Runner-up G = 8

# If, after 90 minutes, a match ends in a draw, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes each will be played. If the score is level after extra time, penalty kicks will be taken to determine the winner in accordance with the procedure described in the Laws of the Game.

# The winners of the eight matches in the round of sixteen will qualify for the quarter-finals.

Quarter-finals

# The eight teams that qualify from the round of sixteen will contest the quarter-finals as follows:

Winner 1 Vs Winner 3 = A

Winner 2 Vs Winner 4 = B

Winner 5 Vs Winner 7 = C

Winner 6 Vs Winner 8 = D

# If, after 90 minutes, a match ends in a draw, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes each will be played. If the score is level after extra time, penalty kicks will be taken to determine the winner in accordance with the procedure described in the Laws of the Game.

# The winners of the four matches in the quarter-finals will qualify for the semi-finals.

Semi-finals

# The winners of the quarter-finals will play the semi-finals as follows:

Winner A Vs Winner C

Winner B Vs Winner D

# If, after 90 minutes, a match ends in a draw, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes each will be played. If the score is level after extra time, penalty kicks will be taken to determine the winner in accordance with the procedure described in the Laws of the Game.

Final, play-off for third place

# The winners of the semi-finals will qualify for the final.

# The losers of the semi-finals will contest the play-off for third place.

# If, after 90 minutes, the final or the play-off for third place ends in a draw, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes each will be played. If the score is level after extra time, penalty kicks will be taken to determine the winner in accordance with the procedure described in the Laws of the Game.
