The elimination of Spain meant it is the second successive time that the holders have been ousted after the group matches. In 2010, holders Italy failed to make it to the second round after losing to Slovakia 2-3 in their last group game.

Spain became the fourth nation to lose in the first round as holders of the WC

Three sides, namely, Italy (1950 and 2010), Brazil (1966) and France (2002) have been eliminated after the preliminary stages of the World Cup as the holders. Spain became the fourth nation to be included in the list but what made its record unique is that it was eliminated even before it finished its complete schedule of group matches.

Spain are yet to play Australia in the group stage at Curitiba on June 23.

The victory of Chile also put an end to Australia's campaign at the 2014 Fifa World Cup.
