Watch: Top 5 WWE Summerslam matches in recent memory

By Raja

Starting in the summer of 1988, WWE Summerslam PPV celebrated its 29th anniversary this year from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. It was "the biggest event of the summer" since the get-going and considered as the second biggest PPV of the year, only next to Wrestlemania. So, it's evident, that we have got some epic main event matches in the event, over the years. Here're the top 5 of them in the recent memory.

The Undertaker Vs Brock Lesnar (Summerslam 2015)

Last year, before Summerslam, The Deadman returned to take revenge on Brock Lesnar from the Wrestlemania 30 defeat, in which he lost his streak. So, the match became an automatic headliner for the Summerslam's 28th anniversary. Taker went toe-to-toe with the beast to have a classic encounter with him and thus offering a “match of the year" nomination during the WWE Slammy awards. However, the finishing was a controversial one.

CM Punk Vs John Cena (Summerslam 2011)

2011's summer saw an ultimate clash between Cena and Punk for the undisputed championship. The infamous pipe-bomb incident was at the backdrop of the match to hype it up even bigger. A controversial decision from the guest referee, Triple H made CM Punk the undisputed champion after a roller-coaster ride. Kevin Nash attacked Punk out of nowhere coming out from the spectators which allowed the Money in the Bank briefcase holder, Alberto Del Rio to cash it in then. Del Rio easily picked up the win over a war-torn Punk to leave Summerslam as the champion.

Undertaker Vs Edge (Summerslam 2008)

It was a hellacious match to finally end the year-long rivalry between Edge and the Undertaker. So, it had to take place inside Undertaker's playground of Hell in a Cell. Vickie Guerrero punished Edge by throwing him into the match since he cheated on her. This match had to happen for Taker's sweetest redemption to Edge who made his life, literally hell. Symbolically, after a brutal fight, Taker sent Edge straight to hell by choke slamming him through the mat. Undertaker put Edge's body and soul to "Rest in Peace", forever.

CM Punk Vs Jeff Hardy (Summerslam 2009)

It was another classic match between two of all time technical wrestlers in WWE history. Punk battled Jeff Hardy for the World Heavyweight Championship in a TLC match. Jeff defended his title which was hanging high above the ring. The fans were on their toes when these two took themselves to the limit. Punk captured the title after pushing Hardy straight off the ladder. After the match, the bell tolled and the lights went and the Undertaker came out of nowhere. He delivered a chokeslam to Punk to make it clear that he is coming after him.

John Cena Vs Daniel Bryan (Summerslam 2013)

This match marked the beginning phase of the YES movement when all the odds were stacked against Daniel Bryan. Not only, he had to face John Cena after months of disregard from the McMahons, but also got Triple H, the betrayer referee and a Viper quietly slithering to strike with his Money in the Bank contract. The franchise and the so-called B-player gave us A-plus match to remember for a long time. Though, the moment was short-lived for Bryan due to a Pedigree from Triple H. Randy Orton cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase to snatch the championship from Bryan, thereafter.
