Placed in tough group alongside giants Portugal, Hungary and Austria, nonone but themselves believed in the team.
In their very first game against Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal they managed to hold them for a 0-0 draw. They successfully bottled up Ronaldo as the star attacker did not get a single chance to open the goal mouth.
In the second match, they hel Hungary for 1-1 draw which also pretty commendable considering how well the Hungarians were playing prior to the tournament.
The last group match saw Iceland take on Austria who on paper where a better team. But Iceland produced a major upset by beating the Austrians and qualify for the knock-out stage finishing second in their group above Portugal!
Next up was Roy Hodgson's England who on paper were one of the best sides in the tournament. But as usual the English side could not live up to the expectations as they finished second behind neighbours Wales.
The odds were definitely in England's favour irrespective of Iceland spirited performance in the tournament as fans expected the Three Lions to at least cross this obstactle without much fuss.
The match later proved to be the biggest surprise of the tournament as the men in blue jersey from the land of Fire and Ice shocked England. They defeated them 2-1 to progress to the quarter-final, their best ever performance in any international tournament.
Unfortunately, Iceland's inspirational performance came to an end on Sunday (July 3), when hosts and tournament favourites France defeated them 5-2. Even though the scoreline reflects a total domination of the Les Bleus, Iceland showcased a spirited performance. They scored two goals in their fightback process which speaks volume about their performance.
As Iceland progressed in the tournament, the fans exhibited a unique way of celebration. After every game the players used to march together towards the fans. Then everybody screamed and clapped their hands in a particular beat.
As the Icelanders reach their country, each and every citizen gathered to welcome the team with immense warmth.
