Liverpool forward Luis Suarez, who missed his team's opening match against Costa Rica, made a terrific return from a knee injury to score both the goals for his team, one in each half. The win gave Uruguay their first points in the tournament after the shocking 1-3 loss in the opener against Costa Rica.
The first goal came in the 39th minute when Edison Cavani floated a teasing ball from the left and Suarez got behind Phil Jagielka and rose well to head the ball past Joe Hart, the England goalkeeper.
England equalized almost the next minute but the long shot of Daniel Sturridge, who scored against Italy, failed to defeat the Uruguayan goalkeeper.
A draw between Italy and Costa Rica will knock out England from the World Cup
Wayne Rooney scored at the 75th minute to draw level after England put up a pressure on the opponent's defence but Suarez ran away with the match by scoring the winner 10 minutes later, thanks to some poor defending by the England players.
A high ball played forward saw Gerrard jump to meet it but he could only flick the ball off the back of his head and into the path of the Suarez who netted it for the second time with a blasting shot.
He, though, came very close to scoring earlier in the match when his header off captain Steven Gerrard's free-kick hit the crossbar. One of the free-kicks of the Manchester United also narrowly missed the target. This was England's second defeat in as many games in this World Cup. They went down to Italy 1-2 in their opening game last week.
