"As a gesture of appreciation for our Olympic athletes, I will present each one with a cheque of Rs 1,01,000," tweeted Salman.

"The government is very supportive of sports. Each of us can also do our bit to encourage a sports nation," the actor, who was appointed India's Goodwill Ambassador to Rio Olympics, further said.

The actor's move, perhaps, came in the wake of Indian contingent's dismal show at the ongoing quadrennial tournmanet as the nation is still waiting for it's maiden Olympic medal in Rio.

In April this year, Salman was unveiled as the goodwill ambassador of the Indian contingent for the Rio Olympics. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) made the announcement.

IOA reportedly had chosen Salman as he is more connected with the youth and sportspersons.

The 50-year-old actor is a youth icon and an inspiration for bodybuilding fans across the country.

His recent film 'Sultan' was a sports-drama which saw Salman in the role of a wrestler who rises from small town origins to achieve international success.

Salman had personally met various athletes before they left for Rio and even tweeted about them on his Twitter handle.
