Pakistan reach semi-final of Street Child World Cup football

Rio de Janeiro, April 5: The Pakistan Street Child football team entered the semi-finals of the Street Child World Cup here after defeating the Philippines in a penalty shootout. The match was tied at 1-1 at full-time and the Pakistani kids broke the deadlock in their favour by scoring three goals in the penalty shoot-out as against the Philippines's two.

The Pakistani team opened their World Cup campaign with a bang. They defeated defending champions India 13-0 in the opening match and beat Kenya 2-0 in the second match. India lost all their four matches in the group stage.

The Street Child World Cup is held ahead of the FIFA World Cup and aims to bring together disadvantaged children from across five continents. Through football, art and campaigning, they try to change the negative perception towards street children around the globe.

The first edition of such a unique sporting event was held in South Africa in 2010, ahead of the FIFA World Cup held that year. Amos Trust, a British human rights charity organisation, convinced the FIFA to take the initiative. The tournament also features a girls' section.

The USA, Burundi and Tanzania also reached the semi-finals along with Pakistan.
