Bengaluru, June 21: Five-time World Champion and 2012 London Olympics bronze medallist Mary Kom will inaugurate the "Ultimate Boxing Championship 2016" at Phoenix Marketcity here on June 25.
"Phoenix Marketcity in association with Ramana boxing club is hosting "Ultimate Boxing Championship 2016", for the first time in India," the media invitation for the event said on Tuesday (June 20).
Boxers from Delhi, Chennai, Pune, Andhra Pradesh and home team Bengaluru will be battling in the first season for UBC (Universal Boxing Council) Championship title for which these boxers have undergone extensive training from past 5 months, it added.
Mary, who is hoping for a wildcard entry into this year's Rio Olympics, will open the championship on Saturday (June 25) at 5 PM and will witness the bouts. Mary was recently nominated to the Rajya Sabha.
"Ramana Boxing Club (RBC) is a boxing coaching centre based in Bangalore at Babusapalya from past 6 years. RBC has trained nearly 5300 students from Schools and colleges to thousands of corporates. The main motto of RBC is to develop the sport and spread the awareness of boxing and self defence to Bengalurians," the organisers said.
Boxing fans can witness the championship for free at the Phonenix Market City.
