New Delhi, Aug 20: Indian shuttler PV Sindhu created history on Friday (Aug 19) by winning a silver medal in women's singles badminton event in her maiden Olympics appearance at Rio.

21-year-old Sindhu lost to world number one Carolina Marin of Spain by 21-19, 12-21, 15-21 in the gold medal match and settled with a silver medal.

The young shuttler from Hyderabad brought some cheer on the faces of billions of Indians who were anxiously waiting for another medal at the ongoing Rio Olympics 2016.

Sindhu is the only fifth woman athlete from India to have won a medal at the quadrennial event and first to have won a silver.

The silver took India's medal tally to two after wrestler Sakshi Malik settled for the bronze in the 58 kilogram Freestyle category on Wednesday.
