Fans and experts around the world are divided in their opinion regarding the two greats of the game in the present generation.

Now Xavi has given his opinion on this never ending debate. Speaking to Cadena SER, the former Barcelona midfield marshal said: "Ronaldo is a player of his time. The problem is that there is another who has been pretty much the best player in history.

"Ronaldo is extraordinary but compared to Messi, for me and for everyone who likes football, there can be no comparisons.

"Messi will be number one until he wants [to stop]. He's superior to everyone and is the best in the world, unless you are Real Madrid."

Xavi had earlier said that Barcelona can never replace Lionel Messi. He had said: "For me, there is no heir to Messi. There will never be one. There will be very good footballers, but nobody at Messi's level."

Club director Robert Fernandez has recently claimed that he is confident about Messi signing a new contract.

He said: "I'm delighted that he's [Messi] the No.1 in the world and that he's with us. We will reach an agreement. I'm totally convinced.

"There's no rush. This season we will reach an agreement. Like we did with Rafinha, Mascherano, Busi and Neymar."
