Bengaluru, July 28: The game's global governing body has fined Qatar Football Association after national team players breached rules and made political statements during the World Cup qualifier against South Korea on June 13.
FIFA said on Thursday that its disciplinary panel imposed a $51,800 fine and reprimanded the 2022 World Cup hosts.
According to Agency reports, the charges related to "displaying a political image" and "political displays" by fans during their 3-2 win against South Korea in Doha.
In the match played at Al Sadd Stadium, Qatar's players warmed up wearing T-shirts with an image of the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to show their solidarity for him in the wake of the ongoing diplomatic row which saw Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates distancing themselves from their regional ally.
Qatar's Hassan Al Haidoos was also fined $5,180 for unsporting unbehavior.
After scoring the opening goal, Hassan took a T-shirt from a spectator and lifted it high in the air, in a clear case of violation of FIFA rules.
