Bhaichung speaking from Mumbai over the phone, said: “Sunil deserved the feat. I wish he scores more goals and he will do that. He has done a great achievement."

The iconic Indian striker who also had 44 goals in his 107 appearances for India in different tournaments, added: “We first played together in 2007 Nehru Cup. That was his debut with the senior Indian team.

"He was impressive right from the beginning. But the significant point which I can remember was his hard working mentality and always an attitude to learn from the seniors.

"It was great to watch that even after the completion of normal training schedule in the national camp as well as during the tournament, it was several times that Sunil asked me for some technical guidance.

"Then on the next day, I noticed he was practicing on the particular technical aspect I advised him on the day before. His diligence and learning mentality has guided hi9m towards today's success."

Bhaichung, however, regretted saying: “I could not call him after he surpassed me with a 90th goal in the country's best football league. But I will call him soon and congratulate him specially."

Asked whether there is any similarity between the style of both these footballers, Bhaichung refuted: “I was a pure striker who liked to play on the box.

"Sunil started as pure striker but later he developed himself as a schemer also. He should be appreciated for that as he has made habit of falling back to help his midfielders and then again position himself during his team's counter attack. He has converted himself to complete footballer."
