London, July 21: Arsenal have reportedly rejected a £16million bid from fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace for the transfer of unsettled defender Calum Chambers.

The Gunners are said to be holding out for as much as £20m for the former Southampton man, who spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough after falling down the pecking order.

Arsene Wenger is targeting a major revamp in his squad this summer and Chambers is surplus to requirements but the Frenchman is looking to recoup as much as possible for the young defender.

Arsenal signed Shkodran Mustafi and Rob Holding to add to their defensive options last summer, and don't seem to have a place for Chambers ahead of the new season.

Even though Chambers is a versatile player who can play either at centre-back or right-back and even in midfield, he has failed to do justice at Emirates since his move from Southampton a few years back.

South London club Crystal Palace are leading the chase for the England international's signature at the moment, but they will have to improve on an opening offer of £16m.

Arsenal want at least £4m more than that for Chambers, having initially preferred to only loan him out this summer, according to the Daily Telegraph.

However, the north Londoners now seem more open to discussing a permanent deal for the 22-year-old, as they look to offload a number of their backup players in a massive summer clear-out.

Wojciech Szczesny joined Juventus on July 19, and other big names such as Jack Wilshere and Kieran Gibbs could also be set to follow the Polish goalkeeper in the coming weeks.

Chambers joined Arsenal for around £16m just three years ago, and has played 59 games in all competitions for the club.

Arsenal have already brought in Alexandre Lacazette and Sead Kolasinac this summer, while Thomas Lemar could follow if they can raise around £80m in funds by making some sales.
