The Italian is looking to balance a Champions League challenge with a Premier League title defence this coming season, but despite the arrivals of Antonio Rudiger, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Alvaro Morata, the Blues' squad still looks thin in some positions according to the former Juventus boss.
However, things will be much tougher this time around with the extra games to play.
Clubs interested in Van Dijk's services were boosted at the end of last week when new Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino revealed that the Dutchman was being made to train on his own at St Mary's after his transfer request.
The Southampton skipper was also left out of the squad that travelled to France for pre-season campaign which means that van Dijk moving away is looking very likely now.
Van Dijk's preferred destination is Liverpool but the Reds are extra careful about their approach now having previously been alleged of tapping up the player. They also had to face an embarrassment of apologising to Southampton publicly.
Chelsea are looking to capitalise on Liverpool's waiting game and land the Dutchman while Conte also wants Candreva and Alex Sandro. With so much money at his disposal, Chelsea could become a much dangerous side if they can complete these three signings.
