Rio de Janeiro, Aug 15: Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar missed her maiden Olympic medal by a whisker as she finished fourth in the individual vault finals in the Rio Olympics 2016 here.
The Indian gymnast scored 15.066 points in the finals when the bronze medal went to Switzerland's Gulia Steingruber who secured 15.216 points.
USA's Simone Biles won the gold medal while Russia's Maria Paseka clinched silver medal in the finals.
Dipa managed to perform her much-appreciated Produnova vault cleanly to secure 15.266 points after the second attempt. But the Indian could bag just 14.866 points in her first attempt, which proved crucial for her and resulted in her low average.
Earlier, Dipa created history after becoming the first Indian to make the cut for the individual vault finals in her debut in Olympic Games after finishing 8th in the qualifying round.
But the country is not disheartened with Dipa's achievements and hailed the 23-year-old gymnast for her remarkable journey in the Rio Olympics.
People took to Twitter to congratulate Dipa and lauded her, on the eve of 70th Independence Day.
Here is how Twitterati reacted:
