Agartala, Oct 19: It is probably the impact of Dipa Karmakar's refusal to accept the BMW car, handed over by legendary Sachin Tendulkar at a function in Hyderabad couple of weeks ago.
The state government of Tripura, in an emergent meeting held last week between top bureaucrats and PWD minister, has decided to expand the roads in Agartala.
Dipa Karmakar, in spite of being presented the BMW car by Hyderabad Badminton Association president, had to refuse it and requested the organisers to transfer the equal amount of money to her bank account due to small roads in Agartala.
The 23-year old gymnast lamented saying, “Only due to small roads in Agartala it will not be possible for me to drive such a luxurious car like BMW. That was the one and only reason I could not accept it.”
The state government officials might have also been aware after Dipa’s regret for not being able to accept the car came out in the media. They immediately held a top level meeting and decided to make bigger roads than before. The reformation work has also started from Dipa’s residence in Abhay Nagar.
The gymnast who ranked fourth in the Rio Olympics, has also been vocal about the revival of national gymnastics.
Karmakar said, “National gymnastics championship is not taking place for last three years. There so many talented gymnasts all over the country. How can they flourish? How can even a proper gymnastics team be built unless talented gymnasts are being nurtured? I feel gymnastics federation of India must intervene into the matter and try to revive the national championship.”
