WWC Final: Chance for Indian women to emulate 'Kapil's Devils' at Lord's

Indian women have a chance to emulate Kapil Dev's team when they face England in the final of the ICC Women's World Cup 2017 final on Sunday (July 23).

Lord's Cricket Ground has a special place in Indian cricket. It is at this venue where India played their first-ever Test, in June, 1932. And in June 1983, India's maiden World Cup triumph happened under Kapil Dev's captaincy.

Now, the "home of cricket" will be the setting for ICC Women's World Cup 2017 final on Sunday (July 23) and it can provide another historic moment for India.

Indian women celebrate during their World Cup semi-final against Australia in Derby on Thursday (July 20)

Yesterday (July 20), Indian women defeated Australia by 36 runs in a rain-curtailed semi-final at Derby.

On Sunday, Mithali Raj-led India face hosts England for the coveted prize. Never have India won a Women's World Cup. In 2005, they made their first final, losing to Australia. Now, they have a chance to emulate Indian men who achieved the glory in 1983 at the same venue.

Social media was abuzz last night with praises for Harmanpreet Kaur, who blitzed 171 not out off 115 (20x4, 7x6) against defending champions Australia in the last-four encounter. Thanks to her scintillating knock, India booked a spot in the title round.

Harmanpreet's knock was compared to Kapil's famous 175 against Zimbabwe in 1983 World Cup. And fans and cricketers are hoping the women can match "Kapil's Devils" on Sunday.

After 34 years, on the hallowed turf of Lord's, Indian women can pave way for next generation of young cricketers, just like Kapil and company did.

The final starts at 3 PM IST - LIVE on Star Sports
