India made the semifinal twice earlier in 2007 and 2014 editions and both times they entered the final. While they lifted the trophy in 2007, they lost to Sri Lanka in 2014.
Virat Kohli, the star of the match against Pakistan at Kolkata on March 19, repeated his heroics in this match as well by scoring an unbeaten 82 off just 51 balls. His innings featured nine boundaries and two sixes and he turned the match around in the 19th over, when India needed 20 runs off 12 balls.
India only Asian side to make back-to-back World Cup semis
This win also made India the only Asian side to reach the semifinal of two back-to-back World Cups. Last year, they made the last four of the 50-over World Cup in Australia and New Zealand but lost the semifinal against eventual champions Australia by 95 runs.
