Television reports said the 36-year-old left-handed batsman suffered a hamstring injury while fielding against the defending champions. They said Gayle would bat only if the team needed him to while chasing the target of 123 in 20 overs.
Gayle, who hit an unbeaten 100 in 48 balls against England at Mumbai in the previous match, was seen trying to get to the crease when the West Indies lost their fourth wicket in the 13th over but he could not as he needed to wait for another 11 minutes before getting to bat, said the umpires.
The ton against England was Gayle's second in the T20 World Cup, afterthe 57-ball 117 scored against South Africa in the 2007 edition.
