This is the second time in the history of the World Cup that an Indian captain has failed to defend his title. In 1987, Kapil Dev's team lost the semi-final against England by 35 runs in the semi-final in Mumbai (Bombay then) and failed to defend its maiden title won in 1983.
England's opening batsman Graham Gooch scored a century in that match. On Thursday, Steven Smith slammed a ton to take the match out of India.
