Sydney, March 26: Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Thursday became the second Indian captain to have failed to defend the World Cup title after Kapil Dev. Dhoni's team lost to Australia by 95 runs in the second semi-final of the 2015 World Cup at the Sydney Cricket Ground after winning seven matches in a row.
This is the second time in the history of the World Cup that an Indian captain has failed to defend his title. In 1987, Kapil Dev's team lost the semi-final against England by 35 runs in the semi-final in Mumbai (Bombay then) and failed to defend its maiden title won in 1983.
England's opening batsman Graham Gooch scored a century in that match. On Thursday, Steven Smith slammed a ton to take the match out of India.
