Canberra, Mar 3: Records continue to tumble at ICC World Cup 2015 and bowlers are at the receiving end. South Africa on Tuesday set another new benchmark in World Cup history, against Ireland at Manuka Oval.
South Africa smashed 411/4 in 50 overs in their Pool B match against minnows Ireland to post their second consecutive 400 plus total. This was after their 408/5 against West Indies on February 27 in Sydney.
With this massive total, South Africa have set a world record by becoming the first team in ODI and World Cup history to top 400 back-to-back. This was South Africa's 5th total of 400 plus, equalling India's record.
And in last 44 days, South Africa had scored 400 plus thrice (In January at Johannesburg, they hit 439/2 against West Indies after AB de Villiers' record 31-ball century) (Amla breaks Virat Kohli's record)
In 40 years of World Cup, no team had twice scored 400 plus totals in the same edition. Now, De Villiers-led side has done it two times in less than a week's time. Before today, only twice 400 was achieved by teams (India in 2007 and South Africa earlier in this edition).
The Proteas' score of 411/4 is the second best ever in World Cup and joint 9th in ODI history. The highest is 413/5 in 50 overs by India against Bermuda in 2007.
Today, Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis hit centuries to lead South Africa's onslaught on Irish bowlers. They had a double century partnership for the second wicket and the finishing touches for the innings were applied by David Miller and Rilee Rossouw.
Amla hit his career ODI best 159 while Du Plessis scored 109. Rossou was 61 not out and Miller unbeaten on 46. South Africa scored 121 runs in the final 10 overs. Against West Indies, they had plundered 150 in last 10 overs.
With new fielding rules of 4 fielders outside the 30-yard circle in non-powerplay overs, it is becoming difficult for bowlers. And we can expect more records to fall at this edition of World Cup.
