Auckland, March 14: Defending champions India won their sixth consecutive match in Pool B against Zimbabwe at the Eden Park here on Saturday. India topped the table with 12 points and will take on Bangladesh in the quarter final at Melbourne on Thursday.

This is the first time in the history of the cricket World Cup that India finished group champions with a 100 per cent record.

They had finished as the group champions in the 1987 World Cup played at home as well but the win record was not perfect. India, also defending champions then, had started the campaign by losing to Australia by 1 run but went on to win the next five matches to finish better than Australia on net run-rate.

Here is a look at India's performance in the group stages since the 1975 World Cup:

  • 1975: India finished third after England and New Zealand in Group A and got eliminated [Played 3, Won 1, Lost 2]

  • 1979: India finished fourth after West Indies, New Zealand and Sri Lanka in Group B and were knocked out [Played 3, Won 0, Lost 3]

  • 1983: India finished second after West Indies in Group B and qualified for the semifinals [Played 6, Won 4, Lost 2]

  • 1987: India finished at the top of Group A and qualified for semifinals [Played 6, Won 5, Lost 1]

  • 1992: India finished seventh among nine teams in the fray [Played 8, Won 2, Lost 5, no result 1]

  • 1996: India finished third after Sri Lanka and England in Group A and qualified for the quarter-finals [Played 5, Won 3, Lost 2]

  • 1999: India finished second after South Africa in Group A and qualified for the Super Six stage [Played 5, Won 3, Lost 2]

  • 2003: India finished second after Australia in Pool A and qualified for the Super Six stage [Played 5, Won 4, Lost 1]

  • 2007: India finished third after Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in Group B and were eliminated [Played 3, Won 1, Lost 2]

  • 2011: India finished second after South Africa in Group A and qualified for the quarter-final [Played 6, Won 4, Lost 1, Tied 1]

  • 2015: India finished first in Pool B and qualified for the quarter-final [Played 6, Won 6, Lost 0]
