India have won all the previous five encounters played since the 1992 edition. In their first-ever World Cup encounter played at the Sydney Cricket Ground, India had beaten Pakistan by 43 runs although the latter went on to become the champions. [10 facts about India-Pakistan match]

Former batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar was adjudged man of the match in three of the five India-Pakistan matches played in the World Cup so far. India's Navjot Singh Sidhu and Venkatesh Prasad had won the award in the other two matches.
