First time since 1979, Windies make WC semis without losing a match

Nagpur, March 26: West Indies qualified for their fourth T20 World Cup semi-final by beating South Africa by 3 wickets at the VCA Stadium here on Friday (March 25). But this is for the first time that the Caribbeans have overcome the first hurdle without losing any match.

They beat England and Sri Lanka before and are expected to win against Afghanistan, the only non-Test-playing side in Group 1 who have already been eliminated.

First time since 1979 that West Indies made semifinal of a WC without losing a match

In fact, if we look at all World Cups the West Indies have played so far, including the 50-over ones, they have made the semi-finals with a cent per cent record first time since the 1979 World Cup, which they had won under the leadership of Clive Lloyd. They had won that tournament without losing a match, just like in the 1975 edition.

In the 1983 World Cup, the Windies lost their first match against India, to whom they lost again in the final.

The West Indies also had a clean record in the group stage in the 2007 edition of the 50-over World Cup but could not ultimately make the semi-final, thanks to an ordinary performance in the Super Eight stage.

In 2012, when the West Indies won their first T20 World Cup title, they lost their first match against Australia.
