In an interview to Times of India, Gilchrist said, "They are different types of players. Virat is the 'next generation' player. As an opponent you may feel like he will offer you a chance, but that comes with a risk too. He can take it away from you quickly.
"Sachin, on the other hand, was so clinical. So often you felt like you just won't get him out, dislodge him. He would just build, build, and build. He is the best player I have played against, but I think by the end of Virat's career, his record and the way he is regarded in the cricketing world will right up there, close to Sachin," Gilchrist added further.
Virat Kohli has been superb with the bat in the year 2016 across all formats. The Delhi dasher has aggregated runs at ease against every opposition this year.
Talking about India's limited overs' skipper MS Dhoni, Gilchrist said he should continue playing for India till the time he deems fit.
Even Indian selectors want Dhoni to continue playing and lead the side till 2019 World Cup, if he feels.
The Captain Cool had only recenlty expressed his desire to continue playing till the next World Cup, a wish which was backed by many in the cricketing fraternity across India.
Sources were quoted as saying, the selectors don't want to change the current hierarchy of the ODI team and would be quite happy if Dhoni continues to play for India till the 2019 World Cup.
