Bengaluru, Sep 8: India's Test captain Virat Kohli has set a new record for a cricketer in the country and has left behind batting legend Sachin Tendulkar.
Kohli has now become the first Indian cricketer to have over 8 million followers on the micro-blogging site Twitter.
"8 Million Followers! Absolutely Delighted. Thank You everyone for the immense love! #Grateful," Kohli tweeted on Sunday (September 6) with a photo him flashing 'V' sign.
Tendulkar, the most celebrated cricketer in India and across the world for over 2 decades, has retired now and the spotlight has shifted to young Kohli.
At 26, Kohli has already broken several batting records and is being seen as someone who could better Tendulkar's feats. Already, Kohli has erased few records of Tendulkar and now he has taken away one off the field.
Tendulkar, now a Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha, still continues to enjoy support from his fans. He has over 7 millions followers on Twitter.
India's ODI captain MS Dhoni has more than 4-million following on Twitter. Batsman Suresh Raina too is in the 4-million club.
In Test cricket, Kohli era has begun and he ended India's 22-year wait for a series win in Sri Lanka, recently. He and his team-mates earned a lot of praise for this historic achievement.
It will not be a surprise if his popularity keeps attaining greater heights in coming years.
