Dindigul (Tamil Nadu), Aug 30: In a last-over thriller, VB Thiruvallur Veerans edged Madurai Super Giants by 6 runs in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) Twenty20 tournament here yesterday (August 29).
Veerans held their nerve to register their second victory in a row. NS Chaturved was the top scorer for the winners with 42.
Veerans posted 143/9 in 20 overs and restricted Super Giants to 137/7 in 20 overs. The 19th over bowled by R Rohit was the turning point of the match, according to Veerans' captain Malolan Rangarajan. Rohit gave just 1 run and took 2 wickets in 2 balls in the penultimate over of the match.
"The 19th over was the turning point of the match, no doubt about it. The best part about the 19th over was - one ofcourse hats off to Rohit and two, we had a plan. We were able to execute every ball to perfection, which is very difficult. He was able to do it (bowl according to plan) at will," Rangarajan said after the match.
"When we said yorker, he was able to bowl one and when we said slower one, he could pull that off too at the right length. So that was something amazing and yes that changed the game. In the last four-five overs, you are bound to go at 10 runs per over. I was having a constant look at the required run rate and as soon as it showed nine, I was confident I could strangle them (Madurai team). But the belief was always there," he added.
Brief scores: VB Thiruvallur Veerans 143/9 in 20 overs (NS Chaturved 42 (38b, 4x4, 1x6), Sanjay Yadav 28 (19b, 3x4, 1x6), M Raja 3/22, DT Chandrasekar 2/32) beat Madurai Super Giants 137/7 in 20 overs ( Shijit Chandran 40 (31b, 7x4), Varun Narender 32 (32b, 4x4), R Rohit 3/21 Narayanan 1/18) by six runs.
