Sourav Ganguly impressed with R Ashwin's variety, says he will do better overseas too

By Sujata Sarkar

New Delhi, Oct 12: Sourav Ganguly is highly impressed with Ravichandran Ashwin's improvement in the just concluded series against New Zealand.

R Ashwin becomes No. 1 Test bowler in the world, again

Ashwin has scalped 13 wickets in the last Test at Indore, destroying the Kiwis almost single-handedly.

Sourav Ganguly impressed with R Ashwin's variety

After India whitewashed the Kiwis to reclaim number one position in the ICC Test rankings, Ganguly said, “Ashwin has developed his bowling a lot. His line and length was near perfect in the last Test. He has got more variety now than before. And the most interesting thing about his bowling, I noticed, he was trying to experiment with ball from both the ends."

Ganguly also added, “I believe it has become easier for Ashwin and other spinners in the team to improve under coach Anil Kumble. Kumble must have helped them a lot in the nets."

The former Indian captain has also expressed hope saying, “I also believe that Ashwin will also be able to deliver in the same fashion even in the matches held overseas."

Ganguly also appreciated Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara's fabulous batting

Along with the praise for Ashwin and other spinners, Ganguly also appreciated Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara's fabulous batting.

Ganguly said, “I hope Pujara has regained his confidence ahead of the series of England. Virat and Rahane played superb innings. More importantly, the pitches in the series did not play a key role. The pitch at the Eden Gardens was also very sporting. So, it was Indian batsmen and bowlers' skill that completed the whitewash."

Another former Bengal player and coach Ashoke Malhotra, when asked for his reaction, remarked, “I knew from the very beginning that it would not be possible for the Kiwis to beat this strong Indian side. So, I feel the scoreline is expected."
