Bengaluru, April 23: Why did Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) Chris Gayle not play against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) last night in the Indian Premier League 2015 (IPL 8)? The real reason has been revealed.
On Wednesday evening (April 22), RCB supporters queued up outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, hoping to see Gayle smash the CSK bowlers all around the ground. But once they got into the venue and settled in, they were in for a shock.
At the toss, RCB captain Virat Kohli stunned all by announcing that Gayle was replaced in the Playing XI by Australia's World Cup 2015 hero Mitchell Starc.
Soon after this, many were disappointed. They kept wondering what was the reason behind this? Was it for his slow innings of 10 off 24 balls in the previous game against Mumbai Indians or something else?
Now the real reason for Gayle's omission from the team is out. RCB spinner Iqbal Abdulla, who took 2 wickets in the match, has revealed why the big Jamaican did not play.
"He himself opted out for future matches. Hopefully he will play all the (remaining) matches," Abdulla told the media in the post-match press conference.
RCB missed Gayle as they failed to chase 182 and went down by 27 runs - a third straight loss, second in a row at home.
CSK batsman Suresh Raina, who too spoke to the media after the match, said he was "surprised" not to see the West Indian playing.
"I was surprised when Chris (Gayle) was not playing," Raina, who scored a match-winning 62 off 32, said. The left-hander won the Man-of-the-match award.
RCB will be hoping this break will help Gayle to construct more big knocks and take the team out of the bottom of the points table.
