Ravichandran Ashwin surpasses Kapil Dev to become highest wicket-taker in a home season

India's premier bowler Ravichandran Ashwin touched another milestone by surpassing Kapil Dev's record of taking 63 wickets in a Test season.

Pune, Feb 24: India's premier bowler and current world No.1 in Tests, Ravichandran Ashwin, touched another milestone on Friday (Feb 24) here at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium.

After removing Australia bowler Mitchell Starc (61) in the first over the of second day's play in the first Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy, Ashwin became the highest wicket-taker for India in a home season.

With 64 wickets in the ongoing season, the 31-year-old Tamil Nadu all-rounder surpassed Kapil Dev's record of 63 wickets in a Test season.

Legendary India pacer, Dev, grabbed 63 wickets in the home season of 1979-80.

Before start of this Test match, Ashwin had claimed 61 wickets in this season, which came at an average of 24.55.

In the previous game against Bangladesh, Ashwin became the fastest bowler to claim 250 wickets in Tests and surpassed Australian bowling legend Dennis Lillee's record.

The off-spinner grabbed Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim's wicket to get his 250th wicket in his 45th Test and reached the landmark. Before Ashwin, Lillee was the fastest to get 250 scalps in Tests who achieved this feat in 48 games.

Earlier in September last year, he became the fastest Asian and second fastest in the world to claim 200 Test wickets. Ashwin took 37 Tests to reach the milestone to break the record previously held by Pakistan's Waqar Younis who achieved it in 38 Tests.
