Karnataka complete a treble again

On Wednesday night (April 26), the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) made the announcement of new coaches for the senior team.

"KSCA is pleased to inform you the appointment of PV Shashikanth and GK Anil Kumar as the coaches of the Senior State Team for the forthcoming cricket season," Vinay Mruthyunjaya, KSCA spokesperson, said in a media release.

"They have been coaches of various age groups of the state for more than a decade.

"The decision to nominate GK Anil Kumar and PV Shashikanth was a unanimous decision of the KSCA Managing committee," he added.

Shashikanth and Anil will replace the successful duo of J Arun Kumar and Mansur Ali Khan, who guided the team for 5 seasons.

The 51-year-old Shashikanth played 51 first-class matches and 19 List A (50 overs) games for Karnataka from 1988-89 to 1996-97 season.

He scored over 2,000 runs with 4 hundreds and 14 fifties. He led Karnataka to Irani Trophy victory over Rest of India in 1996-97.

The right-hand batsman retired from first class cricket in October 1999 and later took up coaching youngsters at various age groups at KSCA.

The 41-year-old Anil featured in 5 Ranji Trophy matches scoring just 64 runs, between 1998-99 and 2000-01 seasons. He too has been involved in coaching youngsters at KSCA.

In the Karnataka Premier League (KPL) Twenty20 tournament, Anil coached Rockstars, a team with film actors. He also played for the same side in 2014.

KSCA acknowledged the contributions of Arun and Mansur, popularly called Jak and Mak.

"The KSCA also acknowledges the contribution of the former coaches Mr J Arun Kumar and Mr Mansoor Ali Khan for their stint as coaches of the Senior State Team for the last 5 seasons," KSCA said.

Arun and Mansur were the batting and bowling coaches respectively from 2012-13 season to 2016-17. However, in the last season when Karnataka bowed out in the quarter-finals of Ranji Trophy, Arun was head coach and Mansur his deputy.

The duo took Karnataka to a historic treble of Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Irani Cup titles in 2013-14 and 2014-15.

Arun is currently with Indian Premier Leauge (IPL) franchise Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) as assistant coach.
