The 38-year-old Sangakkara's all-time XI, with Aravinda de Silva as captain, was announced via a video posted on the official Twitter handle of Lord's Cricket Ground, on Tuesday.

India's batting legend and highest run scorer in both Tests and One Day Internationals, Sachin Tendulkar could not find a place in Sangakkara's XI. However, 2 other batting greats Brian Lara and Ricky Ponting made the cut.

Tendulkar retired in 2013 after playing his 200th Test on his home ground - Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. He is only batsman in history to score 100 international centuries (51 in Tests, 49 in ODIs). He scored 15,921 Test runs and 18,426 in 463 ODIs.

In the video, Sangakkara said, "Matthew Hayden (is) at the top of the order facing the first ball. To complement him I have got Rahul Dravid."

He continued, "My all-time favourite batsman along with Sir Vivian Richards, Brian Lara, at number three. Ricky Ponting at number four.

"Toss up between Aravinda de Silva and Mahela Jayawardene for the crucial number five position. I wish I could have both but I go with Aravinda because Mahela and I both agree that he is the best Sri Lankan batsman that we have seen."

The left-hander said Shane Warne and Muttaiah Muralitharan were the best spinners in the world and he picked both in his side.

"I will have Shane Warne and Muttaiah Muralitharan both in my side. Murali and Warne will always be in my all-time XI. 2 spinners in any conditions, green, seam-up whatever, they are the best spinners I have ever seen. Murali the best that ever played the game, able to bowl out sides in any condition on any given day. Why would you not have them in your side," he said.

The Sri Lankan said it was difficult for him to choose between Australian Glenn McGrath and Chaminda Vaas and he went with the latter.

There are 4 Australians, 3 Sri Lankans and 1 each from India, West Indies, South Africa and Pakistan in Sangakkara's XI.

Sangakkara, one of the best batsmen in the world, played 134 Tests, 404 ODIs and 56 Twenty20 Internationals. He retired with over 27,000 runs in international cricket with 63 centuries (38 in Tests, 25 in ODIs).
