Bengaluru, Dec 14: MS Dhoni was not required to bat as Jharkhand eased to a 9-wicket victory over Haryana in a Group B match of Vijay Hazare Trophy one-day tournament today (December 14) here at Alur ground 2 (Silver Oval).
Paceman Rahul Shukla took 3/33 while captain Varun Aaron and Shahbaz Nadeem had 2 scalps each as Jharkhand bundled out the opposition for a paltry 133 in 33 overs after skipper Amit Mishra chose to bat.
In reply, opener Ishank Jaggi scored an unbeaten half century (62, 92 balls, 8x4) to hand Jharkhand 3rd win in 4 games. Kumar Deobrat was 38 not out (57 balls, 3x4, 1x6) as Jharkhand scored 134/1 in 29.4 overs. Jaggi and Deobrat had an unfinished partnership of 69 runs.
Dhoni, who is yet to shine with the bat in the tournament so far (scores of 9, 44 and 18), was instrumental in effecting a run out (No. 10 batsman Yuzvendra Chahal) and kept wickets for full 33 overs.
With a small total to chase, right-haners Jaggi and Anand Singh added 65 runs in 13.5 overs for the first wicket. after Anand's exit, Deobrat joined Jaggi to take the team to victory.
A few fans who were at the ground kept chanting "Dhoni, Dhoni", wanting to see him bat. But that did not happen. Some of them were pleading the batsmen at crease, "get out, get out" and "please send Dhoni sir (to bat)".
As the contest ended, Dhoni, in his pads, emerged out of the dressing room along with his team-mates and waved at the crowd. A lucky fan ran on to the ground and even managed a selfie with Dhoni before he was escorted out by groundsman.
