IPL 2017 Players Auction: Ben Stokes sets record with Rs 14.5 crore price

England all-rounder Ben Stokes was the costliest buy at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017 Players Auction in Bengaluru.

Bengaluru, Feb 20: England all-rounder Ben Stokes was the costliest buy at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017 Players' Auction today (February 20). (Full list of players sold)

Stokes was bought by Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) for a huge price of Rs 14.5 crore ($2,166,604). With this amount, Stokes set a record for an overseas player. Previously, no foreign cricketer had attracted such a huge amount at IPL auction. However, the most expensive buy in the history of IPL is Yuvraj Singh, at Rs 16 crore.

More than 350 players had entered the auction fray but only 66, including 27 overseas, were sold on Monday. Rs 91.15 crore was spent. (Final list of all 8 squads)

10.22 AM: The auction restarts. Pune started the day with Rs 17.5 core and have spent Rs 14.5 crore on a single player. They are left with only Rs 3 crore. IPL Chairman Rajiv Shukla addresses the gathering, says, "IPL 10 will be a huge success."

10.16 AM: Recap of the 1st session - Stokes, as expected, was the biggest gainer. He was bought by Rising Pune Supergiants for Rs 14.5 crore. Pune, yesterday, removed MS Dhoni as captain and installed Steve Smith at the helm. Stokes has set a record for overseas players. He is the most expensive foreign player. The highest ever is Rs 16 crore by Yuvraj Singh.

10.05 AM: Sean Abbott of Australia is UNSOLD. England all-rounder Chris Jordan is UNSOLD. A 15-minute break now.

10.03 AM: New Zealand's Corey Anderson SOLD to Delhi for Rs 1 crore

10 AM: Stokes' stakes are going up after Pune entered the fray. Pune hold the bid with Rs 14.5 crore. He is SOLD to Pune for Rs 14.5 crore ($2,166,604).

9.54 AM: Ben Stokes, the English all-rounder is now for auction. Rs 2 crore base price. RCB open the bidding. Mumbai and Delhi join in. Mumbai take the bid to Rs 10 crore. It is now betwen Mumbai and Delhi. Hyderabad raise it to Rs 11 crore. Delhi back again with Rs 11.5. It is fight between Delhi and Hyderabad. It has gone up to Rs 12.5. Hyderabd go to Rs 13 crore. 9.49 AM: Gujarat Lions, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) join in to bid for Negi. RCB bid at Rs 80 lakh. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) join in now. It is between RCB and SRH. RCB go up to Rs 1 crore. Negi SOLD to RCB for Rs 1 crore ($149,421).

9.45 AM: Now it is time for all-rounders. First up is Pawan Negi (Rs 30 lakh base price). He was bought by Delhi for a whopping Rs 8.5 crore last year. Pune open bidding.

9.30 AM: The Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) CEO Rahul Johri welcomes the teams' officials as he officially starts the auction. This is the 10th edition of IPL.

"A total of 357 players including 130 overseas players will go under the hammer. The pool comprises 62 batsmen, 117 bowlers, 148 all-rounders and 30 wicket-keepers. 227 uncapped players are waiting to make their debut this season inclusive of 5 players from Afghanistan," IPL has announced.

One day before the auction (February 19), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Mitchell Starc, the Australian paceman, parted ways. He won't be part of the auction too. RCB now have an additional purse of Rs 5 crore to shop today.

The highest base price for a player in auction is Rs 2 crore. Ishant Sharma, Ben Stokes, Eoin Morgan Chirs Woakes, Mitchell Johnson, Pat Cummins, Agelo Mathews are the 7 marquee playes with a base price of Rs 2 crore. The next highest base price - Rs 1.5 crore sees 15 players.

Today's auction is a historic one as 5 players from Afghanistan are set to go under the hammer. There is also one player from United Arab Emirates (UAE).
